Sang-Yeon Lee
Claire Lilienthal K-8 Alternative School
Sang-Yeon Lee was born and raised in South Korea and came to the United States with her husband in 1988. She graduated from Sogang University in Seoul with a B.S. in chemistry and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. In 1996, they moved to the Bay Area where she got her teaching credential at the University of San Francisco. She taught English as a Second Language at Lafayette Elementary for two years before starting work at Claire Lilienthal in 1999, where she teaches Korean immersion to first grade students. She is the longest-serving teacher in the school district's Korean Immersion program, which is held at Claire Lilienthal. Other teachers and school administrators often look to her for support and advice. She spends hours preparing stimulating lessons and activities for her students and has purchased Korean/English dictionaries for the school that were not available in the United States. She makes a special effort to connect with her students' families and encourages parents, as well as children, to strive to fulfill their highest potential. Connecting with young people remains her first love, however. "I love to listen to children's stories," she says. "Teaching is such a beautiful profession that allows me to share a chapter of young people's lives with them. And that's what I want to continue to explore for a long time. I am very proud to be selected as one of the teachers of the month. Coming from South Korea all the way here with this honor makes me feel very special and important. I am very proud of my family for supporting me with everything I needed to pursue what I love the most—teaching."
