Susie Siegel
Yick Wo Elementary
Susie Siegel grew up in Milford, Pennsylvania. She majored in philosophy at Boston University then later earned her Master’s degree in early-childhood development at Boston University, working in Chelsea public schools. She then moved to San Francisco and worked at Edison Elementary School for three years. She has taught kindergarten at Yick Wo Alternative Elementary School for nine years. Energetic beyond belief, she is the school's union representative and is known throughout the city for her innovative teaching. “We cook, we clean, we read, we sing, we paint, we mold, we laugh, and
I work hard to make the kids feel empowered, like we are all part of the classroom,” says Ms. Siegel, who makes a special effort to connect with her students’ families as well. “I am always striving to learn more and be a better teacher and person. I have forged very close bonds with the families that I teach and, really, the hard work pays off in the love I get from the village around me. That helps me every day. The biggest payoff is when I see kids feeling joy. After all, the first year of school should make kids excited about wanting to read and write.”
