MTM Award Recipient
John Clancy
Burton High School

John Clancy was born in Walnut Creek, and his family moved to Visalia, California, when he was a child. He attended school in Visalia, graduated from St. Mary’s College of California and earned a teaching credential in special education from San Francisco State University. He is currently working to complete his Master’s degree in special education. Mr. Clancy has worked for the past eight years at Phillip and Sala Burton High School, teaching students with moderate to severe impairments. His work with children with disabilities has included coaching them in swimming, soccer, golf, track and field, basketball and cycling. He has also worked as a tutor for children with autism. He teaches special needs students in grades 9 through 12, including older students (age 18-22) who are in transition programs, receiving life skills training for jobs and living. A great believer in community involvement, he has built strong relationships with organizations throughout San Francisco, connections which have, in turn, helped enrich the lives of his students. He helps students do volunteer work in the community in soup kitchens and the Jewish Home, as well as other places. A kind, giving and caring teacher, he has developed a very strong reading, writing and math program. “I tailor my curriculum to suit the needs of my students,” says Mr. Clancy. “I work closely with the families to help them as well. I also make sure to relate my teaching to the real world and have many practical experiences and coordinate field trips to enrich the lives of my students. What I am most proud of is teaching kids to read. Without reading you do not have the tools necessary to access the information that you need.”
