Through the dedication and commitment of hundreds of individuals from San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area volunteers have shown that they are what makes Youth & families Connect work.
The results from Youth & Families Connect Events:
On October 5th, 2007, the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival threw a
special concert for 4000 San Francisco middle school student in Golden Gate Park. With the assistance of San Francisco School volunteers, eighty volunteers
helped chaperone the students, assist the teachers, pass out lunches,
run the recycling efforts, and helped the students enjoy this unique
culture experience. It was a wonderful day!
On September 20, 2007, we partnered with Jumpstart and the Pearson
Foundation for "Read for the Record," a city-wide celebration of
reading. Throughout the City, children read The Story of Ferdinand. San
Francisco's main event took place at the San Francisco Public Library
main branch, and hosted Mayor Gavin Newsom, Supervisor Michela
Alioto-Pier, City Librarian Luis Herrera, District Attorney Kamala
Harris, School Board member Hydra Mendoza, San Francisco Schools
Superintendent Carlos Garcia, Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting, Supervisor
Ross Mirkarimi, Dan Bernal District Director Office of Nancy Pelosi,
Sourdough Sam (the 49ers mascot), and hundreds of San Francisco
children. The 258,000 children across the country who read the book
on September 20th set a world record!
On Saturday, September 8th, 2007, the new school year was kicked off with a community wide school beautification event. Youth Connect, Hands On Bay Area, San Francisco School Volunteers and the Marshall Elementary community joined to paint, clean, garden and beautify the Marshall Elementary school site. A new mural was painted in the cafeteria focusing on healthy eating. 4 walls, 15 benches and 4 basketball backboards were painted along with the entire fence surrounding the school. Volunteers organized the library, installed new plants and cleaned and swept the playground while Mayor Gavin Newsom installed new baskball nets.
On May 14-17, 2007, SF Connect worked with the San Francisco Unified
School District, SFSV, and the Gift of Sight Foundation to provide
free eye exams and eyeglasses to over 2000 public schoolchildren.
Kezar stadium was transformed into a full eyecare center and
volunteers worked with the teachers and the kids to insure that this
On November 16th, 2006, we celebrated Dictionary Day. In partnership with the California Dictionary Project, Youth & Families Connect placed volunteers at our public elementary schools in San Francisco to distribute dictionaries to every third grader. Volunteers also instructed children on how to use the dictionaries and lead fun activities. Students learned all about how to use the dictionary as well as had a chance to "practice" with their volunteers and classmates.
Family Festival Day was held on October 14th, 2006. City departments, community-based organizations and cultural institutions combined with volunteers to host over 10,000 participants for a free family centered festival. The day featured activities and entertainment for children as well as free resources for parents and youth.
Saturday, August 26th, 2006, marked John Muir Elementary Community Building Cleanup Day. Teachers, parents, community members and other volunteers worked to improve the campus of John Muir, which merged with John Swett Elementary. The youth centered day culminated with a community barbeque. Over 110 volunteers gardened, fixed up the library, painted halls and made sure the school was in great shape for the first day of school.
