Sandra Berger
Lafayette Elementary School
Sandi Berger grew up in San Francisco's Sunset District and attended Francis Scott Key and Mark Twain elementary schools, A.P. Giannini Middle School and Abraham Lincoln High School. She then went to San Francisco State University. She has taught at Lafayette School since 1971, teaching second, third, fourth and fifth grades. She created an African American history program at Lafayette Elementary. She takes her students to the symphony, ballet, opera and theater and has taken them on overnight trips, showing them different elements of the culture and creativity of San Francisco and the surrounding areas. "I love to see the wonder in their eyes when they learn something new or discover something scientific," Sandi says. "I try to take my students on a lot of field trips. We go to several art museums and a lot of science exhibits. I always plan an overnight field trip with them. This year I took them to Fort Funston. Last year we spent the night at the Marin Headlands. An inspiration to students, parents and teachers, she is also a proud parent. "I am most proud of my daughter. I adopted her 18 years ago, and she is graduating Lowell next month. I wish her a career that she can feel passionate about, like my career, teaching."
